Blended Learning

What is your philosophy on blended learning?

Blended learning is using technology as a set way of learning while using schools and classrooms as well. They work simultaneously together to help create a way of learning that will help to ensure that each child is growing to the best of their ability. Blended learning is definitely.. different, and many people have said that it is hard to plot its effectiveness within the classrooms. I myself believe in it. I think that this type of learning allows the student a kind of independence, while still forcing them to be social with those around them. Many of us have went through that moment where we have an important question to ask the teacher in order to proceed with our work. But the problem is so do the other 20 students in your class, with their hands up, calling the teachers name.
If students are allowed to integrate technology and use it then it puts less pressure on the teacher and the child will be able to receive the answer to their questions in many different ways. Where as the teacher will be able to give that student an answer in words, the internet could show them in diagrams and pictures in a faster manner. Going along with parts of my major, technology is an amazing source in helping with communication. For students with disabilities, technology could make or break their education. Whether you have the child with a hearing impairment, who uses an ipad to talk to other students or to read presentations. Or you have the student who is visually impaired who uses the ipad to listen to the notes or listen to books or even magnify the letters. Technology is helpful. Plus with blended learning you are in a school or classroom setting as well, so you will have that instructor beside the students to guide them and help them in any way that is possible.
I believe cognitively it is a good investment to allow blended learning. I know it can be hard to map out. Like in Educational Technology, it is an online class but we still meet up at times to review and learn how to use the many different features that are offered to us. Or to just come in and ask questions and get the guidance we need. I, personally, have never made it to any of these meetings because they are usually scheduled during other class times. Classes i cannot miss because they are not online. From what I have heard though, they are helpful. Especially the webex videos.

My philosophy

As a teacher in the 21st century I want to integrate technology into my classroom in an everyday setting. I want my students to learn as much as they can. They should understand that there is no cap off for knowledge. You should spend everyday trying to learn as much as you can , in any way you can. I want them to understand that there is more than one way for communication. Using social media sites and certain websites can give each student a chance to make a difference in the world, no matter how old they are. I know my goals will be met through thorough assessments such as summative and formative. Aka testing or continuous observations and quizzes or papers.
My future students should be able to know the basics of a computer. Be able to be confident in their communication skills and be able to be polite and courteous while on the internet. At such a young age i do not expect them to be able to surf the internet or even have a social media account. But they will know how to navigate through apps, pull up word or paint and practice their colors, letters and numbers. Teaching with technology can open so many doors for my students. By allowing them to use the internet, i am allowing them to obtain the knowledge they seek. There are so many new apps and learning games that children can use or play with. It can give students more time to learn because there is no clean up or prep time. It also gives the students freedom to do what they want.
As a teacher i will use technology as best as i can to incorporate each child into the learning. Whether it be with movies, audio or apps, i want each child to learn as much as they can in a fun way. At such a young age, they don't have social media accounts or will they have blogs that they will be updating everyday. So the chances of them writing something that is plagiarizing or unprofessional is slim. If they are educated on the Do's and Don'ts now, when they are older they will not have any problems with it. Technology is such an important part of everyone's life now, that is would be silly to not teach children to use it. At least I could teach them to use it correctly and be able to teach more in the time i am provided.

About Me!

My name is Angelina Miller, I am 20 years old and I am from Akron, Ohio. My major is Early Childhood Education, i want to be a kindergarten teacher. Or maybe even a science teacher. I am in ROTC and plan on being in the army, military intelligence.
I'm the fourth one from the left.

I'm a child at heart and believe that the playground is not just for the young in age.

As a teacher i want to be the loving nurturer to my students. I want to lead by example in being the beat person i can be. I know it sounds corny and almost every teacher candidate says it, but i truly mean it. I want to create crafts, teach the alphabet and read to little children.
I hope to get a certificate in deaf communication. Get a job at Alexander Gram Bell, and work with younger children with hearing disabilities.

Summary of Learning

http://storybird.com/books/educational-technology-2/?token=cemfnhj7kw

The website I used for this was storybird. I used this because I wanted to use both pictures and words to describe what i was thinking. Technology is words, it is stories, it is sounds. The great thing about technology is that is can be anything you want it to be.

My biggest take away from educational technology was that you have to use professionalism while on the internet. That there are guidelines and rules to follow not only when you're on social media sites but when you are publishing information on things like a blog. The internet is a source used by millions of people, which means when you post something is only takes a few minutes for a few million people to see and read what you're saying. This can influence jobs you have, people you meet, your social life and sometimes even your academic life. Technology is a great and powerful tool that can help you to be the best you can be or hinder you.
As i have said in many blog posts before this, i plan to incorporate technology into my classroom on a lot of occasions. It can help with science projects, learning history through family trees and animated diagrams. It can better enhance communication for the students with disabilities.
I plan on allowing this source in my classroom, not a lot because I am very big on face-to-face communication and arts and crafts. But enough to better the education level of my students and allow them to grow under the guidance of the internet.

MP: the final

This is my final post on my major project and everything that i have learned through gaining muscle!
It has definitely been a rough journey.
I learned that building muscles and working out as a college student can be very hard when you have a schedule as busy as mine. And most college students do.
I learned that if you don't eat right or get enough sleep your body and mind suffer too much and make it a lot harder for you to workout and build muscle in a healthy way. It helps to workout with a friend, because if you're anything like me, you're super competitive and want to beat your friends at everything. Yes, that includes working out as well.
The workout themselves were not hard as soon as i learned the correct way of doing them. I thought that since I workout enough and i watch people doing it, that i would have the correct form. I was wrong. Working with professionals and looking up and watching videos on how to do things correctly, i improved a bunch!
I really enjoyed this major project. Not only did i learn how to correctly improve my health and workout but it was something i really loved to do.
I lost 20 lbs and gained muscle.
I now do yoga twice a week along with running 5 miles twice a week and lifting on the off days. I can say that i am completely certain that i will now live a healthier life.

Personal and Professional Habits Related to Technology Use

I created a blog for this class and have really taken a liking to it. It's very open and creative and the rules that were given were not hard to follow or stay within. I know that not many people read this and actually that is perfect for me. I think that I will continue to blog on issues when I can. It may not be 3-4 times a week, like i'm blogging now. But it will be at least once or twice.
I follow many blogs, or i'm subscribed to them i guess you could say. I look for things in blogs like i look for things in twitter accounts. They must follow this criteria:
1. they must be well written
2. be opinionated but have facts to support them
3. pictures. I love pictures
or
4. Be moving. Something about the good in the world and things nice that people or organizations are doing to change the world and bring about the good in it.
I use technology for almost every class that I have. I use springboard for assignments and grades, google docs for my papers and presentations, i'm constantly on google for information about homework or tests. And if i'm not on google i'm on facebook or twitter, updating about the news in the world or simply whats going on in my day. My digital footprint is a sad one. I do not update too often and the accounts that I have are used as a way to keep in touch with family and friends that are far away. I don't seeing it affecting my employment chances in the slightest.
To keep up with the trends of technology i will constantly be trying whats new. Either downloading new apps, updating software or updating my technology i'll do it. I think it is important to stay caught up and understand technology as it grows. It will be easier for you this way rather then waiting and trying to learn everything at once.
As far as collaboration with online documents and presentations. I have done many assignments this way and I must say...I am impartial to this. On one hand it gives a chance for everyone to work together and see what is happening as its happening. On the other hand it can be confusing if everyone is updating at once and changing things while you are too. It takes a lot of communication to work on something as group. But I do like how you don't have to constantly share what you're doing and all you have to do is update from one device and all users have it.
With all this use of technology i do believe that periods of "unplugged" time is needed. Each person needs to take the time to power down and foster their relationships with people in a personal manner..face to face. It is important, especially as aspiring teachers, to develop socially. That means going out and having fun or going out and just being around people. It will help your confidence and growth more then sitting at a computer and/or Ipad.

My philosophy on assessment

When teaching it is very important to understand how your students are developing mentally and emotionally. But most importantly how are they learning and grasping certain information and concepts. It is important to assess your students to find out if what you are teaching is being understood and learned or if its going in one ear and out the other. Assessing your students is not only for them but for you as well. It can tell you what you have to fix and change and what is good in your teaching.

While I was reading one the articles that was given to us, Formative vs. Summative, i thought about if i really believed these worked. And i think they do. Teachers formativly assess students without even thinking about it.  The website is quoted saying, "Formative assessments are on-going assessments, reviews, and observations in a classroom. Teachers use formative assessment to improve instructional methods and student feedback throughout the teaching and learning process" This is used to help foster the growth and learning of children in a classroom setting on a day to day basis. It is needed in order to truly teach.

The other assessment tool that i read about was Summative Assessment. This is used to see if certain academic programs were successful or not. They are not on going and usually have a predetermined time, most of the time its at the end of the year. I think this is a good idea to an extent. If its a test that is given, does it matter how the student does the whole year, if he or she is just going to take a test at the end of the year to determine if the success of something they were in.

Summative assessments usually have higher point values and are valued in high grades. Where the formative is usually small quizzes and papers. I believe they are interlocked. One helps the other, and both are needed.

piktochart

The tool i chose was Piktochart. It makes banners, reports, presentations and infographs. I chose to make a banner for my major project. You can chose from the themes they give you or you can choose to make your own theme.
I choose one of the themes that were offered.
Figuring out how to use this tool was a little hard and some instructions were unclear. To any student that was under grade 6 would probably have a harder time using it then the older students.
I would use this in my classroom to help students in clubs. They would learn how to use the computer better while making posters and banners for other children and teachers. I would assign groups and have them work together to practice team building.
It isn't hard too hard to use and students would really enjoy the creative aspect behind it.
The website is: https://magic.piktochart.com/templates

This is the poster i made for my major project

MP: things have changed

WELCOME BACK

So i been following my plans pretty closely and working hard. I have a 5K coming up on the 11th and have been doing a lot of running. I learned that sleep and water are essential when it comes to large amounts of running.
Also STRETCHING. If you fail to stretch you will be sore and inevitably hurt yourself.
I also learned the best form for when it comes to running. It goes as this:

1. keep your back straight
2. run with long strides
3. keep your hands as if you were eating a potato chip and keep your arms lose
4. breath in through your nose and out of your mouth

Also it helps to put your mind somewhere else, like music or maybe your destination. Doing this will make the run seem like less work and make it go by faster.

Along with correct running form i have been bettering my lifting form. A friend and coach have been going with me while i work out to critique how i am working out. So far so good.

My "gains"

Leg press: 135 lbs
Squat: 155 lbs
bench press: 95 lbs
# of push ups in 2 min: 80
# of sit ups in 2 min: 78
2 mile run: 15:10
longest distance: 4 miles

As far as yoga goes, i have come to learn that it helps when you are sore from working out. It really stretches you and your muscles. BUT beware not to bite of more then you can chew. If you are not use to a lot of physical activity do not do it!
Start low. Maybe with only yoga and then work your way up to working out as well. Or just work out. Whatever is most comfortable or you will burn yourself out.

MP: GAME CHANGER

So as you know I am learning health and fitness for my major project.
I have vowed to learn how to workout correctly and as an added bonus change my life and hopefully gain some mad muscles! (:
To help move this success along in the right direction for the remainder of the time for this project i will learn YOGA and BOXING
*hopefully i'll have some personal pictures of my experience*

BUT THAT IS NOT ALL FOLKS!
I'm going to do a challenge that I learned is very hard and somewhat complicated.

ON TOP OF:
25 Squats every time i use the restroom and 6 hours of sleep every night

MP: A couple missed days

HELLO ALL (:
Don't you worry, I have been working my way through my Major project at full speed
I know it has been a while since I updated, but have you no fear, I'll catch you up, here is whats been missed:

1. I have been working out 3-4 times a week with each of my workouts that i have posted before. I been working on my cardio the most. I LOVE to run and that above all is most important to me.

2. I downloaded an amazing app called: MapMyRun. It is wonderful and super helpful in tracking your runs, walks, hikes and burned calories.

3. I now weigh 117, with WAY more muscle. I can squat up to 155 lbs. 10 squats 3 reps.

4. Now that you heard that here are some new workouts that I learned from Instagram and Google.

INSTAGRAM:

Account: exercises4abs: I did these two the same day, i did each 10, 20, 30, 40.

Then as a cool down I walked a mile and a half.

2. Account : squat_exercises; i did these in one day and repeated 2-3 times

Cool down with a run and some stretches and it will be all good!(:

CONCEPT MAPPING TOOLS

The cool tools that I explored this week was "bubbl.us," The page itself states "Brainstorming made simple!"
I decided to brainstorm about my major project. I thought that this would help me to sort out and organize all my thoughts about working out and what I am actually learning.
It can help me see what I improved on, what was new and what i learned to fix along the way.

OPENING THE APP:
I opened the page and could do certain things with it but if i wanted to go into depth or save i had to make an account...so i did.
After signing up and then signing in I received and e-mail that told me how to do everything in a simple and helpful manner.

IN MY CLASSROOM:
This tool could be extremely helpful in brainstorming for papers. This could teach students how to get all there thoughts down in an organized manner, that is easy to read and color coded.
I would recommend this tool for all subjects: all sciences, history, and english. It could be fun to use to make a family tree with the class as well.

There is really nothing too challenging about this about, especially since it comes with easy to follow instructions that help to lead you through step by step. The only bad thing about this app it that you cannot make bubbles appear to the left or going up.

This is a picture of my brainstorming map. I created it for my major project.

COOL TOOLS: EBOOK

For this weeks cool tools i decided to do an Ebook maker. I used the website https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/my-ebook-maker/ghlhjjfkeghahhinonefjehckgambhhg?utm_source=chrome-ntp-icon.

First upon visiting the site it asks for a name and your email. Using that you create a profile, for free.
I found it easy to figure out. Some features were hard to figure out, like the copy and pasting of words and photos. I also couldn't find a way to insert saved photos.

In my classroom, this will be very productive. I hope to make books with each of my classes, about the different subjects that we cover in school. (science, math, music ect)
This could be very helpful to getting my classes to remember the material i cover. Also it gives them confidence in what they are doing. It can instill pride in their work.

This app is easy enough to use and with the help of a teacher, it could be mastered very quickly. The fact that everything is labeled and displayed like word processor, makes it easy to use.
It could be challenging if a child makes a mistake and forgets to save. Or the computer restarts. Also if the student wants to go back and change things it is a very big hassle.

Here is my Ebook:
http://www.myebookmaker.com/books.php?u=19756&popid=23583

To Ebook or not to Ebook that is the question

Ebooks seem like a good idea. It helps students to display their knowledge and gives them a chance to show what they know. Knowing that they will be creating a book will excite students. In a way it could force them into learning about the subject in which they are writing.
For the teacher it could be equally just as exciting. It gives the teacher a chance to be creative. Ebooks let the teacher, and students, alike a chance to expand on what they know and show others as well. When using these Ebooks in the class, it could instill a sense of pride in each student. Being able to look up at the teacher and know "hey! i created that! i knew that!" It could also give confidence as well.
As i grew up i thought of authors as smart, brave intellectual people. To write a book was, is , something magical to me. I'm not the only one to believe that.. many people do. So to give kids an opportunity to create something like a book, is wonderful. It shows them that they are smart and able to do what any other author can.
I plan to use Ebooks in my classroom and involve my students as much as possible. I want each child to be able to look to them and learn in a more simple manner. This gives each child a chance to not only use them in my class but at home as well. They can download the material with their parents and learn in a quieter slower family environment if that is what they need.
Each child can teach their parents what they know based on the Ebook they helped create. If someone can teach something to another person then it is clear that they not only know what they are talking about..they understand it as well.
It is like Jon Smith mentioned on his website, http://www.redjumper.net/blog/2014/01/using-book-creator-support-autistic-students/, ebooks are contagious and make students who create them excited and globally known authors. He managed to excite a group of autistic students with no motivation in one meeting. Before that, when he first discovered ebooks (or Ibook) he had bettered the English skills of students who struggled with the subject for months. If that isn't a sign of an amazing resource then i don't know what would be.

MP: The Blogger's Guide to Gaining Muscle: Cardio

February 27

Today is a pretty easy day:

STRETCH
lightly job 1/2 a mile
Run 2 Miles
200 meters of Burpee Broad Jumps (as shown below)

1/2 mile light jog

Then breath! (:

March First!!
Today I did more cardio.
I love running and have always believed that is a healthy exercise.
I learned how to correctly run. With new breathing techniques.
TIPS FOR RUNNING I LEARNED:
1. Have a straight back
2. Lean forward and put more weight on the top halves of my feet
3. Take longer strides
- I'm pretty short and find that no matter how fast i run, i never seem to get faster. So taking longer strides can help.
4. Breath in through your nose. (This helps lower heart rate.)
5. Give it everything you have,

STRETCH
1/2 mile light jog
2 mile run
100 meters of burpee broad jumps
1/2 mile light jog

(:

6. Tricep Dumbbell Kickback: 3 sets of 15
http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/main/popup/name/tricep-dumbbell-kickback

**When you are done with the first rotation repeat the whole set of exercises 2 or 3 more times. If you can not repeat to 3 times just try and do as much as you can.
Make sure to be drinking water throughout the whole workout.

REMEMBER: You will not see improvement unless you PUSH yourself. The exercises do no good unless you do them properly and push unless you can no longer push. But do no hurt yourself. Do what you can.

Everyone has to start some where.

MP: The Blogger's Guide to Gaining Muscle, Leg Day!

So I have forgotten to update since the 21st and it is the 2end of March, so i have missed a few days of working out so to make it more simple i will split it up between this post and another one as well.

Feb. 23 2015

On this day I learned a little about what leg day really means. Since previously i had worked on abs, i was taught that it would very useful to give my abs a rest and work on a different muscle group.
Here is what i did for the day:
5-10 min of stretching: Key point is to not harm your muscles so warming them up and making sure they are not too tight is important. This will help prevent any injury.

1. Barbell Squat: 4 sets of 10 reps
http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/main/popup/name/barbell-full-squat
2. Sumo box squat: 4 sets of 10 reps
http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/main/popup/name/box-squat
3.Walking lunges: 4 sets of 10 reps
http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/main/popup/name/barbell-walking-lunge
4.Weighted wall sits: Hold for as long as you can.
*Find a wall and act as if you are about to sit on a chair (don't really sit on a chair) then lay your back flat on the wall. No arches in your back. Sit either 10 or 20 lbs on your lap and hold as long as you can.
5.Leg press: 4 sets of 10 reps
http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercises/main/popup/name/leg-press

If you cannot make it to a gym to preform these here is a link to a very amazing website. This should send you directly to the part of the site that as awesome at home work outs. I recommend using them!

Cool Tools: Photo Tools

I choose to learn about Pic Maker from the photo tools. It is a way to easily create pictures, cards, cover photos. It is easy to use and you can overlay photos, add multiple photos through just one link instead of many little links and it has super cool effects to add to each one of your photos.
I could even use it to log into my social media sites, that way i can easily download photos.
It gives me sizes, do i want to make a Facebook or Twitter cover? Or is it for google.
The steps are easy to follow.
This is the photo I made with this app.
Though it was very easy to do, it took me a good 30 minutes to come up with this. I couldn't stop playing with all the features. I had to figure out that some pictures over lap others but won't over lap certain things. That all the added features go on top and that i can change the colors of certain photos. In the end i can certainly say that i will be using this for my classes. I made a picture collage of my first year of college last year. I choose to do this topic because my first year of college made me who i am and it was in this year that i made my friends and choose the path to the rest of my life.

This could be used in my classroom settings easily.
It could be used to make pictures for certain subjects such as, science and art. Children can use it to easily understand the computer, to make presentations for class, or even to create cards for family members or friends.
I would use this tool because its fun and creative. It helps to catch peoples attention, I would want my students to be engaged and eager to learn.
Students could download this on their laptops or phones and use it any time. It is simple to use and gives step by step instructions. Finding out where to put things so they all work out could be very challenging. There is a system of steps in organizing you have to create/find in order for everything to workout correctly.

Here are some motivational posters I made for my future classroom using this App.

Digital Citizenship

In my personal life digital citizenship holds a great deal of importance to me.
How you act using technology should be no different than how you act in a person to person context. Sometimes a computer can make people braver, more obscure in the way that they act. Sometimes it can do the opposite and give people bravery to say (or well post) the things that they feel or think, that in reality they would never have said.
I, as a student and member of ROTC, use my e-mail all the time. I send and receive e-mails that require the utmost respect from myself and others. They are professional and contain important information that must get out as soon as possible. I also buy my textbooks online, as well as supplies for school and car parts. To me, it is important that the digital world is treated equally to the personal world. I would not want my information, such as credit card number and address, given out in person. So why would i want it on the internet?
Along the lines of privacy, people need to also maintain etiquette while on social media. Personally I have not used social media to hurt anyone else. But I DO however look down on those who do, because yes I have been harmed by negative actions through media. I have been cornered and ridiculed online many times before. I won't go into much details because that is the past and it does not matter. But i will say this:
Be kind online and do not say anything you would not paint on a sign and put in your front yard. When you put something online it is out there for everyone to look at and read. Would you really want to post something that either A:) damages your reputation or B:) could harm you and others around you. The things you do online are now being viewed by employers and could harm your chances of a job if they are not positive postings.
Parents beware of what your children are doing online and keep an eye out for bullying and danger. But do not and i repeat do not hold your children back from thriving on the creativity and knowledge that the internet and media offers your child.

Yes, yes, i understand the internet is a scary place and you only wish to do what is best for what you hold dearest to you. But children need room to grow and transform. Block dangerous sites and add them as friends on all social media sites. Put time locks on the computer to prevent too much time spent on the internet. There are many great things out there that need to be experienced. I happen to find Google, to be my best friend. Through Google i learned:
How to play the piano
Jazz music
how to self diagnose myself ( HELLO webMD)
geography
how to draw
and who hasn't looked up how to kiss when they were younger.
My point is that if, as a parent, you are too over bearing your child will miss out on the great things that the digital world has to offer. They will never learn how to properly act online or grow their skills in the field of technology.

MP: The blogger's guide to gaining muscle

So for my major project I decided to learn how to build muscle correctly. That means how to work out, what to eat and when, and even the amount of sleep i get a night.
So, in my pursuit to this I started talking to a physical trainer and a nutritionist, who both work at Akron U. As well as my family doctor. Things that  I learned my first week:
1. I need between 6-8 hours of sleep a night. If I can help it, try and make it uninterrupted. Continuous sleep is very helpful to recovery and energy.

2. Do not focus my progress on how much weight I loose. Muscle weighs more. I may go up in weight but that could be because i'm building muscle

3. DRINK LOADS OF WATER. Exercise can dehydrate you and water is very important for the growth of muscles as well as recovery.

4. Workout different muscle groups on different days and never continuously. This will give your muscles time to recover and breath before your next workout. You will not get exhausted as fast as if you kept repeating a workout. Plus if you mix things up it keeps it fun and interesting for you as you work out!
5. I learned some different workouts as well.

For my first day February 20. I found a workout online and tried it.. Here is what I did:
Thanks pintrist. Before following this picture I did some stretching and ran a mile before and after my workout. I continuously drank water through the whole workout.
Take your time and work hard. If you can't go fast don't. Go slower and focus on the muscles, you will preform better the more you work out.

Here is another photo to help you if you found that that alone was not enough try adding these ab work outs to the list as well:

Here is an excerpt from my homework on springboard, giving this will give a background to what a am about to write on and help you to form your own opinions,
"You are a teacher at a K-12 public school system preparing a lesson on the rainforest.
You have located images from Google images. They align perfectly with the material you want to address with the class so you decide to download and use them.
To enhance the presentation you find a YouTube video, approximately 7 minutes long, titled “IMAX Tropical Rainforest” and decide to include it as well.
As you begin to develop the presentation you feel that it needs some background music so you purchase an mp3 album of rainforest sounds on iTunes. You plan to play these sounds using your phone speaker while you read a poem.
You plan to read the poem “Rain Forest” by Dave Smith (from The Roundhouse Voices: Selected and New Poems, c1985) and pass out the poem on a bookmark.
You have a few students who will miss the lesson and you want them to be able to access the presentation after the fact. You record the presentation and plan to post it to the school’s intranet (password protected) and also to YouTube so the students could access it easily if they forget the password."

Under copyright law, given that i am a teacher, all these should be allowable due to the fact that I am using them in an educational setting. As a teacher it is fair use that I can copy these things and give them to my students as long as they are for a short period of time.
When putting these resources on Youtube or the schools intranet I would cite your sources and say where they are from. Like wise with the book marks. Make sure to put quotations around the poem and put the name of it and whom it was created by on the same bookmark. Doing this will ensure that you are doing all that you can.
Everything is under the copyright law if done correctly. I have seen many Youtube videos that have had the titles "Made by this person, edited by this person, wrote by this person.." and so on. They are usually accompanied by the phrase, "Copyright not intended, this is not my material." Then a link is given to the original source and the people who create the video take no responsibility creating the material.
To me that is okay. I would want my creations broadcasted to as many people as possible as long as they are not claiming the ideas as their own. As soon as people start to claim things that are not theirs and refusing to cite sources and give credit where credit is due, then that is where it starts to cross a line and become not "okay."
There is a lot of information floating around out there and some people just do not know how to access it. Which, by the way, is okay. No one person can know about everything. That is why i think it is okay that when people see something they should try and share it with as many people as they can. This will ensure that numerous amounts off people learn about as much as they can. Imagine not being able to use things or share things because its not allowed under copyright infringement. Just cite correctly, don't try and take the credit fro everything and always give the original source and creator (making this available is very helpful to everyone!).

My thoughts exactly...

Open access in the classroom might present itself as simply allowing students to have not only laptops and ipads but cell phones as well. It is giving the students ways to access resources as the teacher is teaching. And not only allowing them to access this information but giving them resources to do so. A teacher may make all his/her readings online. Many teachers have set up online, inclass interactive polls. This allows them to ask the class questions and intern the class may text in anonymous answers. Then the answers are polled and the teacher goes from there.
To take this one step higher we can mention online classes and teaching. For example the class i am taking now; Educational Technology. This class allows me not do the homework and watch the videos on my own time, anywhere i want. I think that this is an amazing thing. I have two jobs, 20 credits and am in Army ROTC. I maintain a very busy schedule and am unable to fit in another class. This being online allows me to learn and finish what i need to do in between classes, on my break or late at night.
Though online classes allow students a certain freedom they can have a downside. For me, online classes are harder to understand. I enjoy a face to face classroom setting because with certain subjects i require a more in-depth lesson. Subjects like math would be impossible for me to learn via the internet because i can hardly understand it in a classroom.
People will always rely on a person to person setting. Textbooks might not always be needed but there may always be people who need them. People who find a book more appealing then the internet. Lets face it a book and printed text is more reliable then any internet source you can find. A book does not freeze and refuse to load. There is no sound and sometimes no pictures, this means that the book cannot lag or be disabled. Though resourceful and ever  needed, the internet could crash or go down at any moment. Wifi is not free, and requires monthly payments. I do doubt that text books or even the classroom setting, will become obsolete.

Week 4 prompt

I was posed with the question; "How do we capture the spirit of open, networked, and participatory communities in our learning environments?" for this weeks blog prompt. Never have I ever had to think about an answer for this long. I spent a few days trying to understand it and even looking up and asking what others thought. After all that is when I tried to form my own opinion.
Here we go:
It is important that teachers in today's society and in the generations to come integrate social media as a large part of not only their curriculum but also as who they are. The generation now and the generations to come are not like those in the 1900's and early 2000's. The internet and technology has proved to be an important and fast growing aspect of people's lives. There are many "how to" videos on Youtube. As well as the videos there are also informative blogs or websites that offer up an abundance of information circulated around a particular subject. These sites are used to give knowledge and enlighten people on many different things that they may be, either misinformed or just ignorant to. Many people are establishing themselves and their identities on sites such as twitter, facebook and instagram. With these sites a persons every moment is being documented either through statuses or through pictures. Somethings both.
With that being said...it is obvious to say that the internet is a very powerful resource. And as Uncle Ben once said, from my favorite movie Spider-man, "Remember, with great power. comes great responsibility."  As we grow and expand our knowledge to include the internet and all that it offers we must remember that the things that we say and post will effect our lives in great or terrible ways. Many bosses or employers use the internet and social media sites as ways to check up on who they are wanting to hire. Take this picture for example:
Because she could not control herself on her facebook her boss fired her.
In order to create and open environment that welcomes all to participate we must be informative to those who use social media. Have a lecture or two to teach children and young adults about the safety precautions of using the internet and social media sites. Teachers must lead their students and set a good example on how to publicly act not only on the computer but in person as well. Do not be afraid to use social media to connect with your students. Do not be afraid to use them in classes and promote them as well.
When used correctly the internet can home some of the most life changing sites and organizations.

These organizations use the internet to invite people in to become a community. They reach out and teach and provide through the internet. Students and young adults need to learn how to participate in this.

Knowledge is Power

Teachers and leaders are people that are chosen to lead people into the future. Without them, in some aspect, people would be lost and un-knowledgeable in certain fields of life. In order for people to receive teachers and leaders information, teachers and leaders must effectively create channels easy for anyone to access. Social media has become a huge resource in this day in age. More and more it is becoming easily accessed to not only young adults but teens and even children. Teachers should each create a blog, a website or even have a twitter of there own where they post not only their educated thoughts and opinions on certain subjects, but where they can also post things such as; homework, assigned readings, and scholarly articles pertaining to their subject that students can look to.
When sharing your thoughts on your new blog and twitter, you as a teacher, must censor what you post. Teachers have close to 100 students sometimes. That is 100 inquiring minds looking to you for advice and knowledge. On your social media sites there should be cursing, no inappropriate pictures of you or degrading posts that "bad mouth" any other teacher or student. There should be no promotion of drugs or alcohol and i believe that religious opinion should be kept to a minimal. These are sites that are being created are used purely for education and helping other people while putting your opinion into it.
Students need to know they can look up to you and use you, their teacher, as a resource. In order to do so the teacher must teacher his/her students that everyone fails. There is not one person in this world, who at some point or another, has not failed. "Most people say that it is the intellect which makes a great scientist. They are wrong: it is character," quoted from Albert Einstein. Though not everyone is scientists, it still holds true. It is not about your failure, it is about your character. Can you keep going? Will you give it everything you have? And when you have fallen 7 times will you get up and try for the 8th? It needs to be taught that failure is OKAY. Learn from it and grow because there is so much more to a person then what they cannot do. If someone is not good at one thing they might be really good at another.
There is a reason that we still go to school. Why we still have classrooms and teachers. Sharing things can be just as effective face to face then it can be online. Yes, online is easier because it targets a higher amount of people all at once and at a faster time. But face to face allows for quicker responses when something is not understood. Some people, like myself, learn better from human interaction. When i am able to sit down with a person and see things play out i learn better. I am a very hands on person with learning. But when sharing it is important to share everything. In order for people to learn and grow they need to know all that they can in that subject. I'm not saying teachers should give their whole life story to their students or sit down and give every aspect of their life, but i am saying that, for example, if a history teacher is teaching his/her class about the American Revolution that he/she should teacher both sides of the story not just ours. Give students every bit of knowledge they deserve.
Likewise for the media and social networks. News channels, scholarly websites ect. have a job to inform the people and make them more knowledgeable about certain things. Sometimes more then thousands of people relay on these media sites for information. They must give all the truth and without error. Like teachers they are leaders and people look to them to help them form opinions and be educated about the world around them. It is not right to mislead people into believing things that, simply, are not true. We must begin to create a society that encourages the practice of transparency. We allow media to have access to more information, all the cards must be laid out on the table. Start with many small businesses and then move up. This will ensure trust and allow for open communication among everyone. One people start to see the truth then it many issues will self-correct themselves. If one is forced to "air their dirty laundry," then they might clean up their acts and ensure that what the truth is, is something that they want everyone to know about.

My reaction to "A Teenagers View on Social Media"

Salutations!
My name is Angelina Miller, though almost everyone calls me Angi. I am 20 and though I attend college and am in many volunteer groups, scholarly groups and am currently contracted with Akron's Army ROTC, I still act like I am in 1st grade. That is not saying that I am immature and unable to act in a professional manner. It jut simple means that I choose to be care-free and imaginative. I choose to see the good in everyone and bring out the best. I love to read and am obsessed with art. I am an early childhood education major and hope to teach kindergarten once I am out of the army.
Currently I use an abundance of social media. I have a twitter, a facebook, a tumblr, snapchat, instagram and even a yik yak. I find myself on these almost everyday. Using them to stay in touch with family and friends. I use them to share about my life and to view everything that is going on in my peers and my close friends lives.
I read the article "A Teenagers View on Social Media" earlier this morning. I have to say I agree with him to an extent. Yes Facebook is pretty much dead to most people in my generation and yes, I find it award to use and even more awkward to delete. Instagram is better by far in every way mentioned. My favorite being "There are no links on Instagram, meaning I'm not being constantly spammed by the same advertisement, horrible gossip news article, or Buzzfeed listicle"
Twitter does have the three types of users, snapchat is the social media site with the least amount of social pressure, tumblr IS A SECRET SOCIETY (seriously though, I know none of my followers identity's personally), everyone does go on yik yak before class and during class and yes you guessed it..after class.
Social media is a growing thing that not only my generation is using. As mentioned by Mr. Watts (the author) even the older generation is finding themselves experimenting with the different outlets of social media. When on social media I tend to try and represent myself with some sort of dignity no matter what I am posting to. As a 20 year old I recognize that I have a future ahead of me. Being in the military, as well as a profession of education, conducting myself in an orderly and respectful way is expected of me. Teachers, military personnel and many other professions are seen as leaders, people who protect, serve and lead those around us to better and more intellectual and safe lives. I watch what I post, never do I post anything inappropriate and most importantly though a few curse words may find their way onto my sites, I never "bad mouth" anyone.
Technology in the classrooms can be a great thing. Look at the smartboard. It writes like a black board, but can also be used as a projector. It serves with a duel purpose. As far as social media, it could be used as a great way to keep people informed. It can hit a larger group of people faster than anything else. More and more people are grabbing hold of social media and running with it. I think that it is very important for teachers, instructors and professors to be personally linked with as many of their students as possible. As educators they are looked up too. Their students use them as examples of how to run their own lives.
I know from personal experience, the teachers that helped me the most were the ones that I was closest with. Being more COMFORTABLE with my teacher made me more CONFIDENT in that subject and in that class setting. Social media could be a great thing to use in the classroom.
